Fatty oxidation disorder is the name given to a group of genetic metabolic disorders. It is caused by a missing or improperly working enzyme. People with the disorder are unable to breakdown fat from food or fat stored in the body and convert it into energy. They also may have a buildup of fatty acids that can lead to problems with the liver, brain and heart. Symptoms may vary slightly depending on what enzyme is missing. Read on to learn more.

Step1
Ask your hospital about newborn screening. Some states have comprehensive screening tests performed on newborns which would diagnose fatty oxidation disorder. Determine what tests your hospital screens for at birth. If you have a baby born with fatty oxidation disorder treatment can begin which may prevent complications.
Step2
Understand symptoms. The severity of symptoms may vary depending on the specific type of fatty oxidation disorder present. Symptoms may include confusion, lethargy, irritability, seizures and vomiting.
Step3
Eat every few hours. This may help prevent a metabolic crisis, which can occur if the blood sugar gets to low and the body runs out of fat for energy. Babies may need to eat every 2 to 3 hours around the clock. Children and adults should eat every 3 to 6 hours during waking hours. Speak to your doctor regarding a specific eating schedule.
Step4
Meet with a dietitian. He can provide specific information on foods that should be eaten. A diet high in complex carbohydrates and fiber may be recommended. Foods such as whole grain cereals, vegetables and brown rice may be suggested. Your diet will depend on the specific type of fatty oxidation disorder you have.
Step5
Consider medication or supplements. Some forms of fatty oxidation disorder are treated with L-carnitine supplements. The supplement helps the body's metabolism work efficiently and helps maintain stable blood sugar levels in the body.
Step6
Be aware of the start of an illness which may effect eating. Stomach viruses where symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting may affect blood sugar levels and can lead to problems. Call your doctor at the first sign of an illness to determine appropriate treatment. Some people are advised to come to the emergency room for IV treatment.
Step7
Contact the Fatty Oxidation Disorder Family Support Group. The national organization provides information regarding treatment options, research and ways to cope with the disorder.
