Driving in the rain can be dangerous and driving a motorcycle in the rain can be even more so if the necessary precautions are not taken. It's very important while driving a motorcycle in the rain, you are aware of your surroundings, especially of other drivers around you. Take these tips to drive a motorcycle safely in rain.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pull off to the side of the road if it's raining heavily, especially when it first begins. You may want to make some adjustments such as putting on rain gear before pulling back on to the road.

  2. Step 2

Stay a good distance behind the car or motorcycle in front of you. Several car lengths would be appropriate. Brakes do not work as well in wet conditions and you do not want to slide in to the person who is driving ahead of you.

  3. Step 3

Slow down your speed. Although you may be in a hurry, weather conditions may prevent you from seeing clearly and making smart driving decisions.

  4. Step 4

Squeeze in your clutch and coast over an area that may be slick. This may prevent the motorcycle from losing control or sliding.

  5. Step 5

Avoid railroad tracks if at all possible in the rain. If you can not avoid these, try to cross the tracks in a 90 degree angle. This may prevent the bike from losing control. Be sure you cross the tracks slowly.

  6. Step 6

Look ahead. Be aware of when you will need to slow down or even come to a complete stop. It's a good idea to begin slowing down ahead of time to prevent your brakes from locking up on you. Brakes that lock up may cause the bike to slide or skid across the road.
