    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • 2 cups coconut oil, room temperature
    • 8 oz. mink oil
    • 2 oz. lye
    • 1 cup cool water
    • Plastic, glass or enamel bowl
    • Wooden or plastic spoons
    • Soap molds
      • 1

Mix the cool water with the lye in an enameled, plastic or glass bowl.

      • 2

Add the lye mixture to the coconut oil in a plastic, glass or enamel bowl. Stir it well with a wooden or plastic spoon, but don't yet allow it to thicken.

      • 3

Add the mink oil and continue stirring until the mixture thickens.

      • 4

Pour the thickened mixture into molds.

      • 5

Wearing rubber gloves, remove the soap from the molds. If the soap is difficult to remove, put the soap in the freezer for two or three hours. The soap will contract and come out of the molds easily.

      • 6

Stack the mink oil soap in a warm place and allow it to age and harden, at least three weeks.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Don't be concerned if your soap develops a powdery layer while it is drying. This happens naturally, and the residue will disappear when the soap is used.

    • Lye is a dangerous, caustic substance. Always mark lye containers clearly as a poison. Keep lye out of the reach of children.

    • Always use rubber gloves when handling lye, and never allow it to come in contact with your skin or your eyes.
