From Quick Guide: Gum Disease
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a commercial toothpaste that contains essential oils. Thieves Dentarome Toothpaste lists wintergreen and peppermint essential oils among their ingredients. They also manufacture stronger versions that include thymol essential oil.

  2. Step 2

Make your own baking soda toothpaste and add a couple drops of tea tree essential oil.

  3. Step 3

Experience the beneficial effects on Periodontopathic bacteria when it is exposed to manuka oil, tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil. Tea tree oil shows some promise in tests on plaque and gingivitis when applied in a diluted gel form. Essential oils should never be applied full strength directly to gum tissue.

  4. Step 4

Treat your dental floss with drop of tea tree oil diluted in a tsp. of aloe vera, coating several long lengths of floss and drying before using. Oil of oregano is another good choice.

  5. Step 5

Ask your dentist about trying gum disease products that contain essential oils. In recent years, more dentists are suggesting alternative treatments to their patients who have gum disease.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your dentist might suggest a thorough cleaning of your teeth and roots before trying an essential oil treatment.
  • Essential oils are sold in high concentrations. Used undiluted, they can severely irritate tender gum tissue. Follow all product directions.
