You don't want to look like a gringo on the salsa dance floor. Knowing the salsa "dos' and "don'ts" will help you cut a flashy figure, just like the seasoned pros!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An eye for fashion is helpful! Real salsa shoes are also a plus (see resources).
  1. Step 1

Go for ease of movement. No matter how cute the style, if you can't move your arms comfortably in it or do those dips and twirls, it won't work. When possible, choose stretchy fabrics with give-and-take.

  2. Step 2

Sex it up. Salsa plays up a woman's femininity and a man's masculinity in the eternal dance of love. Ladies, a skimpy top that features your decolletage is essential (push-up bras can help). Gents, look for body-hugging shirts and non-baggy pants.

  3. Step 3

Step out. Shoes are everything in salsa! Flats and clunky heels for women and athletic shoes for men (unless they're the dance variety) just won't cut it. See Resources for sleek, strappy, sexy varieties.

  4. Step 4

Put it all together. Ladies, pair a low-cut halter top with a midriff-baring pant or just-above-the-knee swingy skirt. Guys, top a pair of nice trousers with a sleek, Latin-inspired shirt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test drive your shoes ahead of time to make sure they're comfortable. The latest dance shoes have built-in cushioning and springy arch supports.
  • Less is more: Don't go overboard on accessories, makeup or super-short skirts. You don't want to look like you're trying too hard.
  • Be aware that you're going to get sweaty--avoid polyester shirts!

on 1/8/2009 Sexy, comfortable dance shoes was no longer available. This would be extremely useful. Thanks for the warning not to wear clunky shoes. I don't want to watch women dancing in their hideous clogs.
