Most of us are always looking for another way to squeeze in some extra storage space into our homes. One area that is largely unused and not even thought about in regard to storage is the space under stairs. It can be great shelf space when it is not enclosed underneath.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/4-inch shelving
  • 1/4-inch plywood
  • Four standards
  • Paint or stain
  • Nails
  • 2 1/2-inch wood screws
  1. Step 1

Measure the width and height under your stairs and determine how many shelves you can get in your useable space when you install under stair shelving. For this example, we'll use 12-inch deep shelves. Shelf openings are usually between 12 and 16 inches apart.

  2. Step 2

Purchase materials you will need at your local home improvement store. You'll need 3/4-inch shelving, a piece of 1/4-inch plywood, four standards (adjustable shelf brackets that mount on ends) and paint or stain. You can also use 3/4-inch melamine. This material is pre-finished.

  3. Step 3

Cut sides to desired height. Cut your top and bottom piece to desired length and mount to your sides. Now cut your 1/4-inch plywood for your back and nail in place. Then, secure your sides to the wall studs under your stairs with 2 1/2-inch screws. You can use a screw driver or electric drill for this application.

  4. Step 4

Install your standards (adjustable brackets) 2 inches from the front and back of the sides. The standards provide placement of your shelving when you install under the stairs. Now cut your shelving 1/8 inch short of the opening of the standards. This will allow you to take them in and out and adjust them to the height that you desire.
