Getting a great fingernail shape is not only cosmetic but can also be beneficial to your health. Well-groomed nails keep you from scratching or cutting yourself and can help maintain the health of your cuticles and nails as a whole. A few quick, easy steps can help you maintain the best shape for your fingernails without investing in a professional manicure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cut your nails to a length that suits your everyday life. Some people can get by with long fingernails, while others need a shorter manicure because of work or hobbies. By starting with a correct length, you can easily judge how to shape your fingernails.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want rounded or squared fingernails. While squared tips are usually considered fashionable, they can make the fingers appear short and stubby. If you have small hands or short fingers, consider rounding the tips of your nails for an elongated look.

  3. Step 3

Snip the shape first and finish it out with an emery board. If you're taking a significant amount of length off of your fingernails, it's easiest to begin the shape with clippers. However, if you're working with shorter nails, skip straight to the emery board or nail file. Remember to file in only one direction to keep from splitting your nails.

  4. Step 4

Finish with a buffer. In order to take away rough spots around the edges of your newly shaped and manicured nails, use a very fine emery board or a buffing stick to finish them off.
