Looking for a heartwarming tradition to start with your family? Want a unique, but thoughtful gift for everyone on your list? Try these cinnamon and applesauce ornaments.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cinnnamon (large container)
  • Applesauce
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Disposable gloves, if desired.
  • Ribbon
  • Straws (2-3)or chopstick
  • Waxed paper
  • Cookie cutters in various desired shapes
  1. Step 1

Pour half of large jar of applesauce into mixing bowl.

  2. Step 2

Add cinnamon. You'll use A LOT.

  3. Step 3

Stir applesauce and cinnamon together adding more of either ingredient until the mixture is the consistency of rollable cookie or biscuit dough. (You'll be patting this out and cutting shapes out with cookie cutters, so the mixture needs to be thick and dry.)

  4. Step 4

Turn mixture out onto waxed paper. Pat out until it is about one-quarter of an inch thick. (You want it to come to the top of the cookie cutter when you cut them out.)

  5. Step 5

Cut out shapes. It will be easier to remove the negative area from the shape. In other words, leave the shape where it is and remove the extra dough from around the cookie cutter. Then, carefully remove cookie cutter.

  6. Step 6

Use a straw or chopstick to insert a hole near the top of each ornament. Don't get too close to the top or the ornament will be too fragile.

  7. Step 7

Allow to air dry turning onto opposite side every two days for approximately one week depending on humidity.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to turn every couple of days to promote even drying.
  • Dried ornaments are breakable.
  • Caution children not to try to eat these. They may think that the ornaments are cookies. The ornaments smell wonderful, but with the large amount of cinnamon, they are rather spicy.
