An Epi Pen (injectable epinephrine) is essential in saving the life of a person suffering from anaphylaxis, a severe form of allergy that can result in death. If you don't know how to use your epi pen, it is useless in an emergency situation. Follow these steps to learn how to use an Epi-pen correctly to protect your health.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Store the epi pen correctly. Epi pens need to be protected from light and heat. Never leave it in extreme heat, such as a car.

  2. Step 2

Discuss with your doctor the proper situation to use your epi pen. Learn to recognize the signs of a severe allergic reaction.

  3. Step 3

Ask your doctor for a practice epi pen. Practice using your epi pen at least once a month. In the event of a severe allergic reaction you won't have any time to try to remember how to use it. Practice until it becomes second nature to you.

  4. Step 4

Grasp the epi pen firmly in your fist with your fingers away from the black tip. Using your other hand remove the grey cap, swing your fist in a firm downward motion and jab it into your outer thigh. Hold it there for 10 seconds. Try to remain calm.

  5. Step 5

Seek emergency medical attention immediately any time that you have an allergic reaction that requires an epi pen. Some allergic reactions are bi phasic, meaning that after you use your epi pen you can have a second reaction.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you suffer from anaphylaxis, always wear a medical ID bracelet that states your allergies. It can save your life in the event that you have an allergic reaction and lose consciousness.
