1
Model appropriate behavior for your child. Toddlers are mimics and they love to do what you do. Emphasize moments of sharing in your house. When you finish reading the paper say to your spouse, "Here, it's your turn to read the paper."
-
2
Recognize that sharing is a big step for your toddler. If he is playing with something and does not want to share it, introduce the idea of taking turns with the item. Try not to force your toddler to share, but encourage him give another child a turn at playing with something.

3
Prepare your toddler before play dates. Explain that a friend will be coming to the house and that the friend may want to play with some of the toys. Allow your toddler to put away a few treasured toys that she doesn't want available for others.
-
4
Establish clearly defined limits and expectations for your toddler. Your toddler should know that hitting is not tolerated before he ever hits. He should also know what will happen if he hits another child. Review expectations regularly in a friendly manner. Be sure that all family members are consistent with expectations and limits.

5
Teach your toddler empathy by modeling. If you see your toddler's friend crying say, "Look at that Jane. She is crying. She seems sad. I wonder what made her sad. I wonder if we can help her feel better."

6
Use games and books to teach social skills and appropriate behavior with peers.

7
Practice social skills at home whenever possible. Play with your toddler and practice social skills at the same time. Use dolls to role play different scenarios.
