How to Get Married in Italy

Italy is one of the most romantic places in the world! Couples flock to Florence, Tuscany and Rome to indulge in some old fashioned romance while they celebrate their weddings and then their honeymoons. If you choose Italy as your wedding destination, or the place where you 'tie the knot', then you should know what is required. Follow these tips for getting married in Italy.

1. Take appropriate forms of identification with you. Bring birth certificates, passports, and any type of country identification you think might be necessary.
2. Make sure that both of you over 18 years old to get married. If one or both of you are under 18 years old but over 15 years old, then you will need consent from your guardian or parents for the wedding.
3. Obtain your APOSTILLE, which is known as the seal of the Notary Public of Italy and is in accordance with the Hague Convention. This seal will certify that you have had your divorce finalized or if you are a widower, that your previous partner is deceased. It is not the normal notary public stamp that notaries perform.
4. Get your Nulla Osta done. The Nulla Osta is the final declaration that is made in Italy before the embassy or consulate and they state that you are both single to get married. The cost for the Nulla Osta is $50 USD for each person, and you must pay for it in cash.
5. Get your ATTO NOTORIO done either in Italy or the USA. It is performed in front of an Italian consulate and declares you are both single and you are who you say you are on your documents. You can set up your own appointment and ask them about how many witnesses you will need.
