Step 1
Take your cowboy hat off by holding the front and back of the brim nearest the crown. This not only helps to keep the crown clean, but does not misshape the hat. Do this with clean hands.

Put your cowboy hat on a clean surface upside down. This helps keep the brim shape unchanged.

Use a hat brush to remove the dirt from your hat. If the felt is tougher, use a whisk broom. You can find hat brushes at any hat store.

Cover your cowboy hat with a plastic cover to protect it from rain. The acid in the rain may stain your hat. If your hat does get wet, do not dry it with a drier; this could shrink the hat and alter its shape. Let it air dry.

Keep your cowboy hat in the hat box if you aren't going to wear it for a while. It helps maintain the shape of the hat. You can keep it dust-free in a plastic bag. Leave a small opening so air can get in, thus preventing mildew. You can also store your hat in a wooden hat box, available at the Last Best West.

Keep your cowboy hat out of direct sunlight, as that could shrink the hat and affect its shape.
