Instead of buying a mass-produced pincushion from your local fabric or craft shop, get creative and make one yourself. All you need are a few supplies to create a sewing notion in which to stick your pins.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pinking shears
  • Felt
  • Ribbon
  • Pins
  • Stuffing
  • Sewing machine
  • All-purpose thread
  • Buttons, optional
  • Embroidery thread, optional
  1. Step 1

Use pinking shears to cut 2 pieces of felt that measure 3 inches by 4 inches. Pinking shears give fabric a decorative edge and come in many different designs and sizes.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of ribbon that is 6-inches long. Fold the ribbon in half and place it between the 2 pieces of felt centered in the middle of the top edge.

  3. Step 3

Pin the side and top edges of the felt in place, wrong sides together, and sew them into place using a straight stitch.

  4. Step 4

Stuff the pincushion with filling and sew the bottom edge closed.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the pincushion by adding other finishing touches, such as buttons or hand-embroidered stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your pincushion within reach by hanging it on the bobbin winder of your sewing machine.
  • Although you can use synthetic felt blends, use 100 percent wool felt. It is more durable and feels nicer, too.
