If you love ping pong, then you will quickly learn that simply hitting the ball back and forth across the table will only get you so far when beginning to play against advanced enthusiasts. Here is how to hold your ping pong bat (or paddle as it's sometimes referred to) in the shakehand grip.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Imagine shaking hands with the ping pong bat or paddle. This is the basic approach to the grip.

  2. Step 2

Place your index, ring and pinky fingers around the handle of the racket where it meets the actual paddle. The grip is high-up on the handle rather than settled down toward the bottom.

  3. Step 3

Place the index finger along the base of the paddle of the bat.

  4. Step 4

Relax your thumb on the rubber of the racket. You have just achieved the shakehand grip for a ping pong paddle or bat.

Tips & Warnings
  • The shakehand grip is best suited for backspin style players.
  • The shakehand grip in pong pong unfortunately has what is called a cross-over point where, in a certain area of the court (depending on your stance), the ball is not easily struck from the fronthand or the backhand position.
  • This grip does limit your wrist flexibility, but is strongest for defensive players who are looking for small windows of weakness in their opponent on which to capitalize.
