Hurricanes can put people in a state of panic if they are not prepared. Sometimes there is not enough warning as to when a hurricane will hit. It is best to have everything you need on hand in the event one does appear in a short period of time. Protect yourself and your family from the storm. Stay calm during a hurricane by being prepared and keeping all the right items handy.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get enough water to last for 3 days. If a number 4 or 5 catastrophic hurricane hits, you want to make sure you have enough water to last you and your family for up to 3 days until the emergency team finds you.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you have enough canned and non-perishable foods available for you and your family. Start a supply of canned fruits and vegetables, powdered milk, cereal bars, canned meats and other dry snacks that will last throughout the time of a possible blackout period after a hurricane.

  3. Step 3

Buy batteries and make sure you have a few flashlights for you and your family. Hurricanes can definitely cut power off for several days. Keep the right amount of batteries and flashlights so that you and your family can keep calm and find each other during and after the storm.

  4. Step 4

Plan an escape route for evacuation. Make sure you have a few spots you can evacuate to in the event of a major hurricane. Usually if the hurricane is a category 4 or 5, the government will issue an evacuation warning or order.

  5. Step 5

Put aside extra clothes and essentials, such as prescriptions, soaps and other hygiene essentials. If a major hurricane or storm occurs, you will feel calm if you have prepared all of these things along with an evacuation plan.
