Costumed crowds are part of Mardi Gras. People line the streets of New Orleans wearing costumes, masks, jester hats and beads. Whether you are planning a Mardi Gras themed party or you are going to Mardi Gras, you can make a jester hat fairly easily. Below are the steps you need to follow to make a great Mardi Gras jester hat.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Purple, green and gold felt
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Hot glue
  • Bells
  1. Step 1

Trace a long triangular pattern on a piece of felt. Measure the base to be about 3 inches long. Draw two lines from the base to make a long triangle.

  2. Step 2

Cut out the triangular pattern. Lay the pattern on another piece of felt and trace it. Use purple, green and gold felt to create a traditional jester hat. Cut the shapes out and measure your head to see how many triangles you need.

  3. Step 3

Draw a 2-inch wide band on a piece of felt. Measure your head to see how long you need to make it. Cut out the band.

  4. Step 4

Lay out the band and place the triangular pieces on top of the band in a row. All the points of the triangles are to the top. Hot glue or stitch the triangle shapes onto the band.

  5. Step 5

Add bells to the tip of each triangle. You can stitch the bells to the tips of the triangle, or you can cut the felt tip and use the ends to tie the bell on. This completes the look of the jester hat and adds a fun sound when you wear the hat.

  6. Step 6

Stitch or hot glue the band together at the end. Be sure to place it around your head to find the right place before securing it together.
