Roller derby participants are tough. They battle through bumps, bruises and broken bones just to win each bout. If you like to skate and are looking to get rid of some pent-up aggression, roller derby might be the right activity for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quad-skates
  • Helmet
  • Elbow pads
  • Knee pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouth guard
  1. Step 1

Buy a good pair of quad-skates (not inline). Look for speed skates which have a low boot cut similar to a sneaker. Make sure they are comfortable on your feet and don't give you blisters.

  2. Step 2

Purchase safety gear. You won't need the items when you are learning to skate for a roller derby, but you will need them if you join a team.

  3. Step 3

Practice, practice, practice. You have to know the basics: how to stop, skate fast, dodge people and jump over people. You must also learn how to fall safely.

  4. Step 4

Find a roller derby team in your area. This can easily be accomplished with a quick Internet search. Most teams have their own website, so you can learn about the team and whom to contact.

  5. Step 5

Attend an open skate. If a team is looking to recruit members, they will have an open skate at a designated time. At the skate you can meet team members and show off your skating ability. If there is no open skate, you may be able to attend a practice.

  6. Step 6

Get to know the roller derby girls. If you are familiar with the teams in the area and can skate, you might get a phone call to join the team.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most roller derby teams are for women over 18 only. Men can participate in a volunteer capacity by being referees or taking stats.
  • Before joining a roller derby team, take stock of your finances. Most girls aren't paid for participating—in fact most teams will want you to provide your own equipment and pay membership dues.
  • The skills required to have to join the team will depend upon the popularity of roller derby in your area. If there are a lot of girls who want to play, you may have to know everything before you join the team. However, if there isn't much interest, the team may teach you everything you need to know in practice.
  • Be sure you have adequate health insurance. Roller derby is a full-contact sport and falling is a nightly occurrence. Make sure you can afford the medical bills should you become injured.
