Creating a retreat within a garden is a very rewarding project. Whether swings under a large shade tree or an arbor with a bench in a quiet corner, a garden retreat is a relaxing and enjoyable addition to any home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find an area in the garden that is quiet and peaceful. Any area that serves to relax or inspire is the perfect location for a garden retreat.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a variety of garden retreat additions, such as a large arbor to place in a quiet corner. Add a small sitting bench under the arbor for a place to relax.

  3. Step 3

Place decorative pots and urns in a pattern or randomly throughout the garden for a whimsical touch.

  4. Step 4

Create a gnome sanctuary by populating the garden retreat with several small gnome statues. Use existing birdhouses or logs along a path as gnome villages.

  5. Step 5

Install a series of waterfalls and water features to enhance the garden retreat with the sounds of rushing rapids or a trickling stream. Ponds can also add a sense of calm and serenity by themselves or together with Koi fish.

  6. Step 6

Add a small gazebo or summerhouse for an extravagant garden retreat. Small structures add a sense of scale and solidity to a garden. Populate the space with books, pictures and a few choice pieces of furniture for a quiet getaway.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use leftover house paint to add an inexpensive splash of color to the garden retreat.
  • Use old paint-chipped cabinets for a rustic feel to the space.
  • Utilize old bathtubs, sinks or plumbing fixtures for planters to add a touch of charm to the area.
