Break the ice and entertain with party games

Planning party games for your next event can help break the ice among new acquaintances, create new and funny memories among old friends and might even start a romance or two. Think about the general tone of the party and how many guests will be participating as you select your party games for your next shindig.

Play a game of Autographs to help break the ice among new friends. Each player is given a sheet of paper and a pen. Instruct them to make their mark by drawing a picture, making a squiggle, tracing their hand and then hand the piece of paper back to you, the host. The host then selects two detectives, who must try to determine whose autograph is whose. The winner can be awarded a prize for identifying the most correct autographs.

Gather friends together for a game of Charades. Here the party will divide into two groups or teams. Suggested movie or book titles or phrases should be written ahead of time and placed in a bowl or basket. One member from each team draws a slip of paper. The object of the game is to have your team members figure out your movie, book or phrase within the allotted time. The teams can play for points or just for fun.

See who gets the most kisses when you play "Most Popular" at your next party. This game is a perfect way to wile away the hours before midnight on New Year's Eve. Each player must try to collect as many kisses (evidenced by lipstick marks on the face, hands and body) from the other guests before midnight.

Play dead and host a murder mystery party. Select yourself or one of your party guests as the "body" and have your guests work together or separately to finger the killer. To make the most of the evening plan your menu around the theme and mix up some "killer" cocktails.

Play card games like strip poker with your adult party guests. With each hand, the players should bet a piece of their clothing to remove if they lose. You can even alter traditional children's card games to adapt to a more adult theme.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Keep games simple and easy to play--your guests will enjoy them more without complicated rules.
