Dell laptops are stylish, classy and very high functioning. They also come with an integrated sound card that is decent, but not spectacular. If you want the benefits of nifty sound features like surround sound and advanced editing capabilities, then you’ll have to install a new sound card in your Dell laptop.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Software and driver CD
  • Dell laptop
  • Sound card

Installing a PCMCIA Sound Card in Your Dell Laptop

Step1
Find and purchase a compatible PCMCIA sound card for your laptop.
Step2
Locate the correct PCMCIA card slot on your computer. On most Dell laptops, you’ll find them on the left side of the computer.
Step3
Remove the dummy PC card cover if there is one installed.
Step4
Insert the new sound card into the PCMCIA slot, pushing it firmly into place. Do not force the card into the slot if it doesn’t slide in easily.
Step5
Load the manufacturer’s CD into the CD drive if you are prompted to do so in order to install the appropriate drivers and software for your Dell Laptop PC.

Installing a USB Sound Card in Your Dell Laptop PC

Step1
Check the system requirements to be sure that your Dell laptop has the right USB plug for your chosen sound card.
Step2
Turn the computer on.
Step3
Plug your sound card into the USB plug on your computer. The operating system will identify the new hardware and search for the drivers and software.
Step4
Insert the sound card manufacturer’s CD and install drivers if prompted to do so.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can install the PCMCIA card while the computer is running if your computer supports hot-swapping. The operating system will automatically recognize the new hardware and prompt you to install it.
  • Newer Dell laptops ship with only an ExpressCard slot. As of this writing, there are no sound cards that fit the ExpressCard slot. If you really want to use a PCMCIA sound card in a Dell laptop with only an ExpressCard slot, you’ll need an express to PCMCIA card adapter such as the Duel Systems adapter (see Resources below).
  • Some sound card manufacturers include an express install CD with their hardware. If a CD is included with your sound card, follow the instructions on the CD.
  • Be sure that the PCMCIA card that you choose is compatible with your computer. Always read the System Requirements and the models supported in the sound card’s documentation before installing.
