Add headers and footers to a document in Word 2003 to automatically include page numbers, author names or running heads without disrupting your format or layout. Just follow these steps.
Open a Word 2003 document. Click “File," and then "Open” in Word 2003, or start a new document.
Step2
In the "View" menu, click "Header and Footer." This opens a new text box as well as a toolbar.
Step3
Create your header: Type the information you want in it, and use the “Insert Autotext” menu to include document-specific information like page number, date and author.
Step4
Click “Switch Between Header and Footer.” This is a button near the right-hand side of the toolbar; it looks like a document with header and footer highlighted.
Step5
Type the information for your footer. Again, you can use the "Insert Autotext" menu to insert information.
Step6
Click “Close” when you are finished.
Tips & Warnings
Use the buttons on the header and footer toolbar to insert date, time and page number.
Change the format of the text and alignment of the header and footer just like you would the format in the main document.
For reports with a cover letter or cover page, you’ll probably want to leave the header off the first page. To do this, click "File" and then "Page Setup." Next, click the “Layout” tab. Check the option for “Different First Page” under "Headers and Footers." Now, create the header on the second page instead.
Headers and footers saved in Word format may not open correctly in other programs.
