Once you’ve downloaded Skype, which enables you to talk to other Skype users in the U.S and Canada for free, you'll need to get a good-quality headset. Using a microphone and separate headphones won’t give you very good sound quality, so it's best to invest in a headset. There are many different types of headsets to choose from. Here's how to choose the best headset for Skype:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go online or to your local retailer and do your research and comparison shopping. Find out what types of computer headsets are available and research their features and how much they cost.

  2. Step 2

Determine a budget. How much are you willing to spend on a new headset? They are not typically expensive: You can spend less than $20 or up to $80.

  3. Step 3

Try on a headset if possible before you buy. Cheaper headsets often have little padding on the earpieces, so they can be less comfortable than more expensive options.

  4. Step 4

Consider shopping at the Skype Shop (view link in Resources below) where you will find Skype-certified headsets—the most highly recommended headsets that work well with the Skype software.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that most headsets should work quite well with Skype. Don’t feel the pressure to “upgrade” or buy the latest, nicest headset if you can’t afford it or really don’t think you need it. However, if you have extra money and enjoy extra or advanced features or more comfort, go for it.
  • Make sure you buy a computer headset, not a telephone headset. A computer headset will have two speakers for your ears, a small flexible microphone for your mouth and two connectors (or cords) to plug into your computer—one for the speakers and one for the microphone.
