Craigslist can be an extraordinarily useful tool on the Internet. You can find just about anything: jobs, relationships, recreational equipment, even housing are all available on Craigslist. However, it is also largely unregulated, and can be a hotbed for scam artists and thieves. It is extremely important to protect your personal information when using Craigslist.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Visit the Craigslist Web site (see link below). Familiarize yourself with the site before using it.

  2. Step 2

Avoid releasing personal information on Craigslist. This is more difficult than it sounds. Check and recheck your ads for information. With the license plate number on the car you’re trying to sell, somebody could steal your identity.

  3. Step 3

Deal only with people you can meet in person. It’s also a good idea to only meet people in person in a crowded place or in a group.

  4. Step 4

Remember that Craigslist does not participate in any transactions. The exchange will be completely unregulated.

  5. Step 5

Report scammers and fraudulent users to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (sse link below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Just as you should never send money to anyone over Craigslist, you should never send any goods or services over Craigslist with the promise of money in return.
  • It is especially difficult to protect personal information when using the "Personals" section because the idea is to become more familiar with someone. However, you can divulge your age, likes and dislikes, and other information while withholding information like your address and telephone number.
  • Never send money over Craigslist. A possible exception is if there is a third party who can verify the existence and/or reputation of the person you’re dealing with.
  • Be wary of wire service transfers or sellers who live far away.
