Satellite TV involves receiving signals from a satellite where as cable TV entails airing programs. The biggest difference between satellite and cable TV is the picture and sound quality. Unlike cable TV, satellite TV programs are excellent quality with some of them being high definition. Here are some guidelines that can help compare Dish Network with cable TV.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Weigh the features. Dish Network features compared to those of cable TV are phenomenal. Dish Network offers far greater number of channels with superior picture quality and CD sound. Some programs are also available in HD and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Other Dish Network features include more value for money, hundreds of popular channels including CNN, ESPN, HBO, Starz, Cinemax and Showtime Unlimited, special sports pack for sports lovers, Disney and other kid oriented channels for children, pay-per-views, adult programming, parental lock, DVR service, lucrative deals, round-the-clock customer service, Internet connectivity and re-installation facility for subscribers moving to new locations. Cable TV offers fixed number of channels with the option of pay-per-views. Broadband Internet connection is also available with most cable operators. The main disadvantage with cable operators is the limited number of channels.
Step2
Determine the equipment required. Dish Network requires setting up a satellite TV dish antenna, a coaxial cable, and a receiver. It is recommended that such equipment should be installed and set up by professionals. Alternatively, cable TV does not require any equipment unless you want to subscribe to pay-per-views and other services. Subscribers need to call the cable company and wait for some time for the cable personnel to visit them to get the service activated.
Step3
Assess quality. Dish Network being satellite TV offers 100% digital picture and sound. Dish Network’s DVR service enables consumers to record favorite programs in digital format. Viewers even receive HD channels. Cable TV quality does not offer such quality and options.
Step4
Evaluate pricing. Dish Network offers several packages to suit all kinds of budgets. People can opt from the basic Family Choice to top of the line all-encompassing deals with options to pause or rewind live TV, watch one show while recording another, set spending limits for pay-per-views, and even view caller ID on television sets. Cable TV may appear to be less expensive than Dish Network, but it also offers fewer channels and none of the services mentioned above. With cable, quality also takes a backseat.
Step5
Think about customer service, particularly if you live in remote areas. Dish Network is one of the two satellite TV giants in the United States. Fierce competition makes the company offer good 24x7 customer service with a representative showing up at your doorstep within 24 to 72 hours. In comparison, cable TV may take more time in generating a response. Another perspective to customer care is the time it takes to restore services after bad weather conditions. Satellite TV typically resumes on its own. Cable TV outages usually affect entire communities calling for large scale restoration of service, which generally translates into longer time.
Step6
Get satellite radio service from SIRIUS on Dish Network. Dish Network provides more than 50 satellite radio channels that are completely commercial free. Cable TV does not have this kind of service.

on 12/16/2007 I dont know if you have heard of Time Warner Cable, but it doesnt sound like it. They do have over 300 chs some in HD and they have Movies on Demand and over 30 other chs on Demand which the "Dish" does not have. They also have DVR service, 24/7 support, and the outages only last 1 hour at the most. this artical sounds like it was writen 20 years ago.
