How to Use Scatter and Pattern Brushes In Illustrator

You can make special effects with Scatter brushes, calligraphic brushes, art brushes and pattern brushes in Adobe Illustrator. These instructions apply to Adobe Illustrator 8. Procedures for other versions may vary.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  1. Step 1

    Open a file or create a new file.

  2. Step 2

    Display the Brush palette by choosing Show Brushes from the Window menu.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the brush that you want to use.

  4. Step 4

    Create a line or path using the Paintbrush tool from the Tools menu. The brush effects occur along the path that you have drawn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Alternatively, draw your path first using any of the drawing tools, then stroke the path with one of the brushes.
  • To make the line itself invisible, use white or the color of your background.
