Buying a softball bat requires knowledge of the player using it, as well as some consumer know-how.

From Quick Guide: Softball
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Softball Bats
  1. Step 1

Buy a bat based on the size and experience of the player. The taller the batter, the longer the bat. This allows the player to better drive the ball.

  2. Step 2

Buy a properly weighted bat. Test this by holding the bat out to your side, using your weaker hand. You should be able to control it for at least 30 seconds.

  3. Step 3

Swing the bat. A measure of proper weight is if you can hear the noise of the wind. If you can't, the bat is likely too heavy.

  4. Step 4

Look for a bottle bat. This is a bat made with the maximum thickness allowed. A semibottle bat is more tapered, and is for a stronger player. This type is known as an end-loaded bat.

  5. Step 5

Look into which balls are used in the batting cage before buying a bat. Some harder balls used in cages dent certain bats.

  6. Step 6

Expect to pay between $50 and $275 for a softball bat. Shop around for the best prices, as they vary greatly.

  7. Step 7

Buy one bat to start; this is sufficient.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask a knowledgeable salesperson for help.
  • Keep in mind that some bats are subjected to the cold and may dent more easily.
  • For longer wear, rotate the bat when using it: When hitting, hold the bat with the label facing you one time, away from you another time, to the side for the third time and so on.
