Fire safety on the job is just as important as fire safety in the home. Take an active role in preventing fires by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Conduct an office fire drill once every six months. It's a good idea to have one person appointed to "fire safety duty" to plan drills and make sure fire hazards are avoided.

  2. Step 2

Make sure fire extinguishers are mounted every 75 feet, in the vicinity of employees.

  3. Step 3

Keep fire sprinklers clear of clutter. Avoid hanging objects from them, and make sure there's an 18-inch clearance below each sprinkler.

  4. Step 4

Leave fire doors closed. In the event of a fire, a closed fire door can save more of the building from becoming damaged by not allowing the fire to spread.

  5. Step 5

Check all electrical wires and cords for fraying. Use a power strip if you need more than two outlets.

  6. Step 6

Dispose of all broken electrical appliances.

  7. Step 7

Turn off all decorative lights when you leave work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have working smoke detectors in the building.
  • Know two ways out of the building in case of a fire.
  • Never take an elevator during a fire - take the stairs.
