How to Bypass Macrovision on Roku

How to Bypass Macrovision on Roku thumbnail
Macrovision only affects Roku Players connected to a VCR unit through composite video.

Macrovision is a copy protection system used to prevent unauthorized duplication of videos released on VHS and DVD. However, some users trying to connect a movie player, such as the Roku Player, through a VCR or TV/VCR combination unit, may experience distorted video quality when watching movies, due to the Macrovision protection. The only way watch a Roku player through a video connection with Macrovision enabled is to bypass the video signal through a Digital Video Stabilizer, which will also improve the video quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a set of color-coded component audio and video cables to the "Output" ports on the back of your Roku Player.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the component audio and video cables to the color-coded "Input" ports on the Digital Video Stabilizer.

    • 3

Plug the Digital Video Stabilizer into an available power outlet.

    • 4

Plug another set of color-coded composite audio and video cables to the "Output" ports on the Digital Video Stabilizer. Connect the other end of the cables to your VCR or TV/VCR combination unit.

    • 5

Tune the VCR to TV/VCR combination unit to the "Aux" or "Video" input channel using the channel buttons on the remote. The Roku Player will appear without Macrovision copy protection.

Tips & Warnings

  • This solution only works for the composite video output of a Roku Player. However, Macrovision copy protection should not affect the playback of a Roku Player through HDMI or component video output.

  • Digital Video Stabilizers are not as readily available in electronics stores, because of the declining sales of VHS tapes and VCRs. However, many online retailers still offer these devices.
