Socket 7 motherboards accommodate older Intel and AMD CPUs (processors), such as most Pentiums and K5 and K6 series CPUs. These instructions presume your motherboard has a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Make sure the motherboard voltage matches the CPU's requirements before installation.

  2. Step 2

Place the motherboard on a clean, static-free surface, such as its packaging bag.

  3. Step 3

Handle the CPU with great care and as little as possible. Inspect gold pins to make sure they are straight.

  4. Step 4

Locate pin 1 on the CPU and motherboard socket. Look for a dot, notch, arrow or other mark on one corner of each.

  5. Step 5

Align the CPU to the socket.

  6. Step 6

Carefully lift the lever next to the socket and pull back until the lever is perpendicular to the motherboard.

  7. Step 7

Carefully insert the CPU straight into the socket.

  8. Step 8

Make sure CPU pins are all in the socket, and the CPU is less than 1/16 of an inch from the socket on all sides.

  9. Step 9

Return the lever to its original position. Expect some resistance, but be careful not to break the lever.

  10. Step 10

Feel the lever lock into place.

  11. Step 11

Attach the heat sink and fan according to manufacturer's instructions, if not already attached.

  12. Step 12

Connect the cable from fan to power supply.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you bend a pin on CPU or cause other handling damage during installation, do not expect manufacturer or retailer to warrant the chip.
