How to Unlock the Windows Hot Button From Numbers to Letters

Unlike full-sized keyboards, laptop keyboards do not have a separate number pad. Instead, the functionality of the number pad is integrated into the main section of the keyboard. Similar to a full-sized keyboard, a laptop’s integrated number pad is useful for quicker calculations in numerical spreadsheets. If you do not use such programs, however, and find numbers instead of letters on your screen as you type, you simply need to toggle the function off.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your focus to the document that you would like to type in by clicking it.

    • 2

Move the cursor to the location that you would like to type in by using the left and right arrow keys.

    • 3

Locate the "Num Lock" key on your keyboard.

    • 4

Press and hold the blue "Fn" key and then press the "Num Lock" key one time.

Tips & Warnings

  • The "Fn" key activates a key's secondary function when pressed. Not all laptops have this key, however. If yours does not, you may simply need to press the "Num Lock" key itself to toggle it on and off.
