How to Set Up Service Dependencies

When booting the Windows operating system, your computer automatically starts a series of services. While modern computers can do so efficiently, older computers may take a long time to boot due to the number of services that have to be launched. A solution to this issue is to instruct Windows to only start core services and load secondary ones only when needed. You can do so by establishing service dependencies. Dependent services are only loaded if their parent service is needed by the system. You can establish service dependencies using the Windows Registry Editor.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Windows Registry Editor by clicking on "Start" and type "regedit" in the search box. Click on the "regedit.exe" shortcut.

    • 2

Navigate through your computer's registry by using the left-hand pane to locate the folder "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\."

    • 3

Right-click on the name of the service that should depend from another service. Open the "Edit" menu, hover your mouse over "New" and select "Multi-String Value."

    • 4

Enter "DependOnService" and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

    • 5

Type the name of the parent service in the "Value data" field. If you want to list several services, you can do so by inserting a line break between them.

    • 6

Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.
