Make your own tissue paper roses to provide a touch of spring to the indoors.

Decorate for a special event such as a garden party or wedding without spending a lot of money. Make your own tissue paper roses to provide a touch of spring to the indoors. By building tissue paper roses around a pipe cleaner, you create a bendable stem you can hang in a number of ways. Twist the pipe cleaner stem around a candle holder or hook in the ceiling. String many paper roses by twisting the pipe cleaners around a garland of ribbon.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a heart shape and a teardrop shape on a piece of shirt cardboard. Make the heart slightly bigger than the teardrop. Cut these shapes out.

    • 2

Trace around the cardboard shapes on a piece of tissue paper. Trace 10 teardrops and 20 hearts. These will be your petals.

    • 3

Roll the top and side edges of each petal around a pencil to curl it under.

    • 4

Tape teardrop petals around a pipe cleaner with floral tape. Fan them out, laying each petal over the previous one until you have a ring around the pipe cleaner and about 1 inch of pipe cleaner sticking up above the petals.

    • 5

Lay the remaining teardrop petals, then the heart-shaped petals, around the pipe cleaner in layers. With each layer, the curled petals will tighten in until you have a bud in the middle of the rose. Move up the pipe cleaner 1/4 inch with each layer, and tape the petals to the pipe cleaner as you go.

    • 6

Hang the flower by twisting the pipe cleaner around a garland. Repeat the entire process for each rose you want to make.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use stiffer crepe paper or construction paper to vary the appearance of the rose.

  • Use wire wrapped in floral tape as an alternative to pipe cleaners.

  • Make a garland out of fabric, crochet or knitting.
