Climb to the stars, or at least the stairs, with a garage climbing rope.

A climbing rope is a tool used for strength and weight training. A typical climbing rope has large knots at varying distances along the rope. Hauling your own body weight up to the top works the shoulders, forearms, pectorals, chest and abdominal muscles. Before you climb the rope, make sure it is set and secured properly. A garage often has open rafters that make logical hanging points for a climbing rope.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Climb up the step ladder and feed the climbing rope over a rafter. Feed enough rope over so there is approximately three feet of slack on the ground.

    • 2

Position foam chunks under the rope on the top of the rafter to prevent the rope from getting friction damage at the sharp corners of the rafter timber.

    • 3

Cut the rope so you have at least three feet to work with at the rafter, after the rope wraps around the rafter and foam.

    • 4

Tie a bowline knot (see Resources) around the rafter and pull the main body of the knot underneath the rafter, making sure the rope remains on the foam pieces.

    • 5

Move the ladder and climb up one to two knots to ensure the rope is secure, the knot holds and the foam stays in position.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an enclosed ceiling, use a stud finder to locate a rafter. Drill out a 6-inch hole from the sheetrock on either side of the rafter and thread the rope through the holes. Pack the holes and rafter top with foam to prevent friction damage to the rope and erosion to the ceiling material.
