How to Etch a Ceramic Mug
Etched ceramic can make a big visual impact, especially when done by hand. Because etching actually digs into the surface of the ceramic, it’s less likely to fade or rub away than paint or glaze. Etching also gives ceramic pieces some texture. You could simply etch a name on a ceramic coffee mug or go so far as to etch a relief into a decorative ceramic tile. The process may sound daunting, but modern tools make it possible for even laymen to create etched ceramic. Unglazed ceramic gives more easily under a grinding bit than glazed ceramic. Glaze offers a very hard shield, while unglazed pieces have a porous, powdery surface. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Chalk
- Protective eye wear
- Face mask
- Grinding stone bit or fine bit
- High-speed rotary tool
- Compressed air
Instructions
-
-
1
Sketch your desired design onto a ceramic mug with chalk.
-
2
Put on protective eye wear and a face mask. Etching ceramic creates a lot of clay dust that can injure eyes seriously and cause lung problems.
-
-
3
Snap a grinding stone bit onto a high-speed rotary tool. Alternatively, use a fine bit for better control.
-
4
Trace the outlines of your sketch using the rotary tool. Go over the outlines a second time with the rotary tool to create details and shading, just as you would in a pencil drawing. The difference with etching is that the shading has texture.
-
5
Stop etching every few minutes, and blow compressed air onto the ceramic mug to get rid of ceramic dust.
