Drive small nails into the door frame along the outside edge at irregular intervals. The nails should be far enough away from the opening itself that the ornaments will frame the doorway but not actually hang into or block the doorway (where they might get knocked off).
Step2
Choose and hang ornaments all around the door, varying colors for effect.
Step3
Place horizontal-shaped - or at least short - ornaments along the top; longer ones look great on the sides.
Step4
Don't forget the mistletoe!
Tips & Warnings
Consider who will be walking through your doorway - if you or your friends and family are tall you'll want to hang ornaments higher.

I lived in an apartment where the landlord didn't like holidays and would take down any decorations that were on the outside of the apartment. So we decorated the inside of the windows with wrapping paper (print side in white out) and patch worked the walls with paper also. The holidays envelope you even when you're around a Scrooge!

Living in an apartment complex, I cannot do a lot of decorating outside the apartment. So my solution: I make my door look like a present! I use wrapping paper, ribbons, bows. The front door is a giant Christmas present.
