With home audio editing software you no longer need to consult a sound engineer to mute the voice track on a song. Whether you'd like to re-record the vocals on a track or use a karaoke version of the song, muting the vocals is a straightforward process. Once you've downloaded an audio editing program, you'll be able to remove the vocals with just a few clicks of the mouse.

  • Cool Edit Pro software program
  • Sound Forge software program

Instructions

  1. Cool Edit Pro

    • 1

      Download Cool Edit Pro to your computer.

      Open Cool Edit Pro by double-clicking on the icon from your desktop.

      Click "File," "Open" and then find the audio file on which you'd like to mute the vocals.

      Click "Effects" within the Cool Edit Pro window, select "Amplitude" and then click "Channel Mixer."

      Click "Vocal Cut" and then select "OK." The vocals will now be muted on the song.

    Sound Forge

      Download Sound Forge Pro 10 to your computer. Note: this software costs approximately $375.

      Open the Sound Forge program from your desktop and find and open the file you'd like to edit by clicking on "File" and then "Open."

      Click "Edit" within the Sound Forge window and select "Select All."

      Select "Process," located near the top of the window and then choose "Channel Converter."

      Select "Stereo to Stereo" from the drop-down menu and click "Vocal Cut" from the list. Select "OK."

    Audacity

      Download Audacity and open the program from your desktop.

      Click "File," "Open" and then find and open the audio file on which you'd like to mute the vocals.

      Click the down arrow beside "Start Without" on the left side of the screen and choose "Split Stereo Track."

      Click on the "Effect" menu at the top of the window and select "Invert."

      Click on the top "Start Without" menu on the left side of the screen and choose "Mono." Click on the bottom "Start Without" menu and choose "Mono."
