Add fringe tassels to a kid's scarf for a festive decoration.

If you want to take your knitted scarf beyond a plain rectangle, add a decorative tassel fringe to the ends. Kids' scarves are an ideal project on which to use a bit of novelty yarn such as fun fur or ribbon yarn. The more colorful you make the tassels, the better. Knitters who only have solid colors of yarn to work with can mix and match them, using several colors to make a single tassel.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four strands of yarn for each tassel, with each strand being twice as long as you want the tassel to be plus 1/2 inch. For example, if you want the tassels to be 4 inches long, cut four 8-1/2-inch strands of yarn. Choose a yarn of the same weight you used for the scarf and a crochet hook the same size as your knitting needles.

    • 2

Lay the pieces of yarn side by side, and gather all the strands in the middle.

    • 3

Slide the crochet hook horizontally through the first stitch along the bottom edge of the scarf. If you look at the edge from above, it will look like a row of Vs. Each V is one stitch, and the crochet hook should go behind both sides of the V.

    • 4

Fold the middle of the gathered yarn over the curve of the crochet hook, with the strands that hang down even on both sides.

    • 5

Pull the crochet hook back through the stitch, bringing the folded yarn with it. The strands should still stick out on the other side of the scarf.

    • 6

Bring the loose ends under the edge of the scarf to meet the fold. Pull all the strands through the loop and give them a tug to make a tight knot.

    • 7

Repeat for every stitch on the edge of the scarf. Trim the ends of the tassels once they are all attached to even out the fringe.
