Why Do You Get a Headache After a Workout?
-
Exercise Headaches
-
An aggressive workout naturally can lead to post-exercise soreness; but if you get a headache either once or consistently after workouts, you could be doing something wrong. Here are some causes of post-exercise headaches and what you should do.
Heart Rate
-
Any exercise that raises the heart rate significantly can cause a headache afterward as the heart rate comes back down to resting. If the headache persists, or if the heart rate does not come down, call your doctor.
-
Dehydration
-
Dehydration is often the root of problems after exercise. Drink water before, during and after exercise to keep your body cool and to help the body repair itself, regulate its temperature and keep down inflammation.
Mechanics
-
Incorrect or unbalanced form can be the cause of a headache. When muscles pull unevenly and develop imbalanced strength from opposing muscle groups, it can cause pain. If that pain starts or radiates from your back, shoulders or neck, it can cause a headache. Bad form in an exercise can result in a pinched nerve that can be painful and tricky to correct.
Blood Sugar
-
Make sure your are eating a healthful and sufficient diet. When you exercise, your body burns fuel, or food. When your fuel source starts to run low, your blood sugar can drop, causing among other things a headache. Make sure your body is sufficiently fueled before you work out. If you suspect this is the cause of your headache afterward, take in a little food, water or sports drink.
Precautions
-
If you are not regularly active, you should always see your doctor and get an all-clear call before starting any exercise program. Even if you are an athletic person, you should make sure to get a physical regularly to make sure your body can support your desired exercise levels. All headaches should be taken seriously. If you are experiencing significant pain, you should most definitely contact your doctor.
