Anyone with a basic understanding of business planning, management and marketing would probably have no difficulty starting a pizza delivery business. Of all food-related businesses, it's the most simple, with a fairly narrow menu and broad appeal. Though it's an Italian food, pizza has become an ingrained part of American culture that people go to almost automatically in certain situations such as not having food in the house or not having time to prepare a proper meal. Plus, pizza is fairly cheap and easy to make and doesn't require a lot of highly skilled employees.

Though franchising can offer name recognition along with a reliable menu, supplies and recipes, opening a franchise tends to be much more expensive, and, with a popular food like pizza, it usually is not necessary. Besides, designing your own look and specialty pies can be a lot of fun. Buying an existing non-franchise location already equipped for pizza-making, however, could be a real cost and time saver. If this is not an option, you will have to obtain ovens and identify a good wholesale source for ingredients like flour and cheese. Franchises can also complicate the employment picture, as they might include employee benefit plans that require employer contributions. For the most part, though, the sole-proprietor owner of a pizza delivery business can treat their individual drivers as subcontractors responsible for their own gas, auto insurance and tax withholding. Even if they are regular employees, drivers are usually responsible for these items anyway. Cooks, who should stay in the kitchen and not deliver food for health reasons, can be trained to make consistent product in very short order without any special skills.

As with any restaurant business, opening a pizza delivery joint means licensing, permits and food health issues. These are usually not difficult, however, and most of the important details are available through the local license commissioner office in city hall. If the shop is takeout and delivery only, this will simplify permitting and insurance as compared to a full dine-in restaurant. It will also mean less space is needed, which should lead to lower overhead costs for leasing. Whatever location you pick, become familiar with the ebb and flow of activity in the area. Some suburban areas might have very little foot traffic, and business after normal dinner hours can slow significantly. Other more urban areas can see a significant walk-up business in the later hours when other businesses close. It's recommended that you incorporate with your state and obtain at least a federal tax ID number and choose a name that's not already being used in the state's fictitious name database.
