Right Turn Lane Safety

It's important to be vigilant on the road, especially when making a turn.

Right turn lanes can improve the flow of traffic on a street, helping people reach their destinations in a safe, efficient manner. There are certain safety rules that all drivers should heed when using right turn lanes.

  1. Right Turn on Red Light

    • Although it is often legal to make a right turn on a red light, you must make a complete stop and look both ways for oncoming traffic before doing so. You should also yield to pedestrians, bicycle riders and other vehicles.

    Lane Change

    • When turning from a right turn lane, you should continue in the same lane, usually the one closest to the right-hand curb, through the entire turn. Make sure to travel completely through the turn before switching lanes.

    Marked Turn Lanes

    • If a right turn lane is marked with an arrow or a "right turn only" sign, drivers cannot go straight in the lane. In this case a turn is required.

    Pedestrians

    • Always remember that pedestrians have the right of way, especially at crosswalks. Be sure to look for pedestrians before turning, as a collision could cause serious injury.
