U-Bolt Torque Specifications

A U-bolt is a type used on automobiles to join certain components. These bolts, like any other on a car, have specific torque, or tightening, values. Proper application of torque ensures all of your components are joined and fitted.

  1. Applications

    • U-bolts operate clamps to hold the springs to the vehicle's axle. While U-bolts are not the only way to hold them together, they are the easiest, least expensive and most reliable method for doing so.

    Torque Specifications

    • Although torque differs from bolt to bolt and from vehicle to vehicle, estimated and recommended torque specifications are possible. For example, U-bolts with a rod diameter of 3/8 of an inch will torque to around 30 foot-pounds and those with a rod diameter of 9/16 of an inch will torque to about 90 foot-pounds of torque. Check your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for precise values.

    Warnings

    • Never re-use old U-bolts. Achieving the proper torque is impossible in used U-bolts. Anytime you replace the car's springs, you should replace the U-bolts.

Torquing U-bolts is also the only way to ensure that your springs are attached correctly. Correctly torqued U-bolts prevent the center section of the spring from moving at all.
