Paper Vs. Electronic Storage

Both paper storage and electronic storage have benefits.

Many individuals and businesses have switched to electronic storage in the 21st century as computer technology continues to advance. While electronic storage has many benefits such as reducing paper and saving time, the risks are also worth considering.

Benefits

Electronic storage simply refers to files stored on a digital device such as a computer as opposed to on papers which may be stored in file cabinets or folders. Electronic storage is often less costly than paper storage; it can provide security such as password protection; it allows for easy share and access of files and it saves time and space.

Risks

While electronic storage has more modern-day benefits, there are two major risks: loss of files and security breaches. Files can be lost if there is a problem or crash of your system. However, the risk of losing files can be eliminated or greatly reduced by keeping multiple digital copies of files on several computers in several locations. A breach in your computer security is also a risk. To reduce this risk, be sure your electronic storage system has antivirus protection and is password protected.

Environment

Perhaps the biggest argument for using electronic storage over paper is the environmental benefits. Reducing or eliminating paper from your daily life can save millions of trees and water costs associated with the production of paper. Paper waste is also known to fill up landfills and create pollution.
