While there are different applications for the term control module, the most common is the power-train control module (PCM) located in your automobile. It is also known as an engine control module or an engine control unit. This module is one of the primary devices in your engine control system serving as its on-board computer.

The PCM is an electrical device which manages how air and fuel are combined in cooperation with the catalytic converter in your automobile. Through a series of sensors, the PCM decides how to adjust the engine's operations. This is especially the case with regard to temperature because the engine must be suitably warmed up for the computer to assume control over functioning.

Because the control module is so central to your engine's functioning, any malfunction could essentially stop the engine from working. Because there are so many similar-looking PCMs, the wrong module might be installed by yourself or an unseasoned mechanic.
