Vulnerability Scanning Software

Vulnerability scanning software may protect against threats that are not detected by other security programs. It also can detect flaws and weaknesses in existing security software, such as firewalls and antivirus programs.

  1. Function

    • Vulnerability scanning software helps protect computers from being compromised by hackers. It scans computers for known and unknown security weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

    Features

    • The features offered by vulnerability scanning software may depend on whether programs are tailored to individual corporate use. Some may, for example, scan for insecure passwords and detect missing security patches, while others are designed to detect vulnerabilities on a computer network, such as unauthorized administrator accounts. Most commercial programs identify and repair problems.

    Online Scans

    • Online scans carried out by reputable security websites may be useful in determining how vulnerable your computer is to potential attacks. Free scans generally only diagnose security weaknesses and users may have to pay for programs to fix problems. However, an online scan may, for example, find a vulnerability for which a patch can be downloaded easily from a software provider.
