What Is a Satellite FTA File?

A satellite dish receives FTA broadcast signals.

The acronym FTA stands for free-to-air. An FTA receiver translates the content in an FTA file to display free-to-air satellite television broadcasts. An FTA file is the equivalent of a television channel. The Internet is an abundant source of FTA file sites, from which you can download various FTA files.

  1. Satellite Signals

    • FTA programming is broadcast in an unencrypted format, and can be downloaded by a satellite dish and an FTA receiver. The FTA files on that receiver correspond to specific programming; when you add FTA files to a receiver, you are adding channels. FTA receivers will display only FTA programming and cannot be used to obtain encrypted satellite programming from providers such as DirecTV or Dish Network.

    Broadcasting

    • FTA files are commonly used to show international broadcasting, such as Telepace (Italy), Deutche Welle TV (Germany), ETTV Global (Taiwan) and Sentanta Sports (Ireland). North American FTA files are available for programming such as NASA Education Services, Classic Arts Showcase and Democracy Now.

    FTA File Sharing

    • Because the programming provided from FTA files is free, such files do not require a subscription. FTA files are readily available on Internet file-sharing sites such as those listed in the Resource section.
