What is a Houndstooth Pattern?

The houndstooth pattern originated in the Scottish Lowlands and has become a fashion staple over the years. Whether used for wool scarves or on cotton jackets, this contrasting pattern has proven its ability to stick around.

The Pattern

Houndstooth is a pattern so named because it looks like a dog's back teeth. According to the Ralph Lauren Style Guide, the pattern is made up of "distinctive broken checks that resemble pinwheels or the pointed teeth of a hound."

Colors

The houndstooth pattern is usually made up of two colors. While black and white are the most common colors used, other contrasting colors are used as well.

Fabric

Traditionally, houndstooth is used on woven wool items. It can also be used on other fabrics, such as twill.

Fashion

Houndstooth is most commonly seen on scarves, but is also used on jackets, gloves and other articles of clothing. According to the Museum of Learning, the pattern was used frequently from the 1930s to the 1970s. The pattern became most popular in the 1950s for men, and returned to the runways in 2008 and 2009 as a popular style.
