The Federal Emergency Management Agency offers a certification program for Independent Flood Adjusters called the National Flood Insurance Program. After completion the flood adjuster receives a Flood Certification Number card.

  1. Levels

    • There are five categories a flood adjuster can receive certification in. These categories are Residential (Dwelling), Manufactured Home, Small Commercial, Large Commercial and Condominium. Adjusters can certify in all or just one of these categories.

    Qualifications

    • To certify in Residential, Commercial or Manufactured Homes, an adjuster must have four years of experience with property loss adjusting and preparing scopes of damage of up to $50,000 for manufactured homes and $500,000 for residential and commercial. Also the adjuster must attend an NFIP workshop to demonstrate these skills. To certify for Large Commercial or RCBAP, an adjuster must have five years of large-loss property adjusting and preparing scopes of damages in excess of $500,000. Written recommendation in the adjusters favor must be submitted from three insurance companies.

    Application

    • To apply for certification, the adjuster fills out the Adjuster Certification Application reflecting his experience level. The NFIP Bureau and Statistical Agent verify all information submitted on the application before approval.
