Tips on Decorating Your House & Yard for Halloween
Create a spooky atmosphere for a Halloween party for your family to enjoy, or to create an outdoor scene that will scare trick-or-treaters. Set up your decorations with a few tips in mind. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Themes
-
Unify house and yard decorations by working them around one specific theme. For example, make a graveyard scene with tombstones outside and skeletons inside. Create a witches lair with a bubbling cauldron, black cats, bucket of brooms and a pumpkin carved with a full moon. Go for a haunted house look with fake cobwebs, giant spiders and furniture draped in white sheets.
Pumpkins
-
Pumpkins are an essential decorating element for Halloween, indoors and outdoors. Decorate a table by carving the tops out of miniature pumpkins and placing tea lights in them. Carve traditional jack-o-lanterns, paint pumpkins white and paint or stencil designs on in black, or create letters by boring out small holes in a pumpkin. Cut flame shapes in pumpkins and arrange them in the fireplace.

Lighted Decorations
-
Whenever possible, choose lighted decorations for outdoors. These make the house seem inviting to trick-or-treaters while still maintaining a scary atmosphere. Line the path with ghost luminaries made by drawing faces on white milk jugs and placing candles inside. Illuminate other outdoor decorations with spotlights with orange or green colored filters over them.
