What Is VoIP Jitter?
More and more often, tech-savvy individuals are turning to VoIP calling to get in touch with people from all over the world without having to pay a fortune in long-distance charges. Though the call quality is typically as good as with regular phone calls, connection problems such as VoIP jitter can make it practically impossible to carry on a conversation.
-
Cause of VoIP Jitter
-
VoIP jitter occurs when the data packets sent for your call are sent and received with significant variations in their timing. This is essentially the same as having a long ping delay between the two devices that are trying to connect, but because the conversation is happening in real time, the problems this causes are more pronounced.
Effects
-
The effects of severe VoIP jitter on a call are immediate and obvious. Users on both sides of the call will notice delays in the audio, resulting in a choppy or uneven connection. Extremely low levels of VoIP jitter might not even be noticed, though as the connection worsens, so does the call quality.

Troubleshooting
-
To help avoid problems with VoIP jitter, one of the things that an advanced user can do is to establish a buffer on their end to minimize packet delay. Alternately, talk to your network administrator about reconfiguring the priority of voice traffic data so that its able to better utilize the available bandwidth.
