How do I Render Mink Oil?

You render mink oil by reducing chunks of animal fat.

Mink oil is created from mink fat through a process called rendering, or melting the fat into oil. Mink oil is typically rendered in large quantities by animal processing factories but can be done in small quantities over a stove.

Basic Rendering

The most common form of at-home mink oil rendering is Open Kettle Wet Rendering. First you must obtain mink fat, which can be removed from the animal's pelt when it is skinned.

Step-By-Step

Cut the fat into small pieces and cook over low heat in an open kettle. Skim the fat off the top as it separates from the oil at the bottom. After the fat melts completely, it can be strained through a cloth and stored in a sealed container at room temperature.

Uses

Mink oil contains palmitoleic acid, which is used as a moisturizer for the skin and for the treatment of leather.
